Coach Selection Process

How the Recreation Department selects, screens, and clears volunteer coaches for youth sports.

Examples of duties

Teach skills through effectively planned practices at a level appropriate for each member of the team, and organize the players to participate in games and coach them during games.

  • Work with parents and communicate openly.
  • Supervise the players before, during, and immediately after practices and games.
  • Provide a safe and enjoyable environment for all players, giving each child an equal opportunity to play.
  • Communicate with the League Coordinator and Recreation Department.
  • Serve as a positive role model to the players, parents, officials, and fellow coaches.
  • Follow rules.
  • Demonstrate good sportsmanship.

Qualifications

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and skills of the sport being coached. Coaches must be at least 15 years of age to be an assistant coach and 18 years of age to be a head coach.

Experience playing and/or officiating games and team sports (basketball, soccer, softball, or baseball) is helpful, along with knowledge of the sport or activity assigned. Coaches should be able to work independently while following oral and written instructions, work cooperatively with others, be neat, orderly and honest, interpret policies and procedures, handle multiple tasks, provide their own transportation, and watch and scan patrons' activities and the facility area for hazardous activities, materials, and equipment.

Background check and clearance

All applicants must complete a coaches application form and submit a copy of their driver's license and social security card for the background check. All applicants 18 years of age and older must have clearance from the Department of Justice. Fingerprints are done free of charge at the Livingston Police Department. Recreation Department staff will screen applications, and those applicants meeting the qualifications will be contacted.

If a coach does not pass the background check or is not cleared by the Department of Justice, they will receive a letter from the Chief of Police with his recommendation. If there is any history of violence or sexual abuse, applicants will be turned down. It is the goal of the Recreation Department to provide a safe environment for our children.
